Airport History

Construction of the KHIA started in the late 1960s, and in May 1972 the airport was officially opened by His Majesty King Hussein. Under the initial phase of development, the airport was provided with a runway, a small passenger terminal building, a fire station, and a parking apron with an area of 200 x 110 m sq

the years, the facilities at the airport have been upgraded or expanded to meet the rising demand of the air traffic. Some major projects which were completed during the past five years are:

Major renovation/refurbishment of the whole passenger terminal building in 2002. The work included the replacement of the existing conveyor belt and the provision of a duty free outlet, a cafeteria, a bank and other shops in the terminal building,

Construction of a new cargo building, a new cargo apron together with a new parallel taxiway in 2004; and

Construction of the Ayla Aviation Academy, the Royal Jordanian Academy, the Aero Wings for Industry’s assembly plant for light planes, the Jordan Private Jets Services (JPJets)’s private jet terminal, and the Al Baddad International Group’s maintenance centre in 2007
